mariposa. We had wonderful service, despite being dreadfully underdressed in a restaurant with a live string duet and beautiful views of the sunset over Ala Moana beach. The food was spectacular and reasonably priced for Hawaii.

Good restaurant in a mall!?. Mariposa is located inside the Nieman Marcus store in Ala Moana Shopping Center. The restaurant is very nice and has a great view of Ala Moana Beach, especially during the sunset. However, if sitting out in the veranda/lanai, the traffic noise may be just a tad noisy. Overall, the food is great. The prix fixe menu was good and actually filled me up. The price is a little bit higher than expected, but good restaurants in Hawaii seem to be attached to malls or hotels (e.g. the Roy's in Maui is across the parking lot from a Safeway supermarket). The service could be a little better, especially with attention to detail. The wrong food item was placed in front of my wife TWICE. The first time, the appetizer was placed in front of her, and she informed the server that "my husband has the fixed price menu, so that goes to him". When the entree arrived, the server set my entree in front of my wife, to which she had to inform him that "my husband has the fixed price menu, so that goes to him" again. Other than that the ambience, and food is great.
