Editorial Review for Beach House Restaurant – by Suz Andreasen

The Scene
With its thatched roof and the glowing smolder of tiki torches, this romantic eatery offers a treat for the senses. The large oceanfront room is accented with oversized sliding-glass doors, Koa wood ornamentation and a friendly and attentive staff. Tables are well-appointed, and an impressive wine list offers imported vintages for every budget. Come for an early dinner or cocktails to catch a spectacular sunset.

The Food
Inspired menus that change daily include such unique offerings as Kauai asparagus salad, seared crusted macadamia-nut mahi mahi with miso sauce, and sea scallops with lemongrass and kaffir lime. Non-greasy crab cakes served with mint sambal butter sauce and grilled tomato compote are seasoned perfectly. Local boy paella features fresh seafood with home-style fried rice and seafood saffron broth. Desserts include Molten Chocolate Desire, a hot chocolate tart that melts in your mouth and Kahlua taro cheese cake, a tangy combination topped with lilikoi (passion fruit) creme fraiche.

Wow the food exceeded our expectations and so did the value of it. It wasnt terribly overpiced for what you were getting and it was all very good. My husband had the lamb chops which were perfect and I had the fish with crab topping and scallops. YUM!! We watched the sunset from our table and it was beautiful. The choclate soffule was a great ending to our wonderful evening at the beach house.

Pros: Food, View, Parking, Value

Cons: difficult to get reservations

My wife and I have dined at the Beach House at least once each year for the past 25 years (except when it was closed after Iniki). Last night was a disappointment. Even though we had reservations and arrived a few minutes early, we had to wait for a table. The staff members at the reception desk were very unfriendly. Our table was crowded into a corner, far from the windows and with little view. Our waiter was very slow, perhaps too busy with too many other tables. After he brought a bottle of white wine, he asked if we wanted an ice bucket. Of course we wanted an ice bucket. What did he think we would say? Perhaps, “No, I’m sure that is too much trouble for you.” Maybe, ”No, we want it to get warm.”, or possibly, “No, we will swill it so fast it won’t have time to get warm.” There were long waits between courses. We had to ask for enough butter. The main course was served at room temperature. When we cancelled our upcoming reservation for the next week, no one asked why. They are obviously so busy that they no longer need to care.

Pros: Great view, come at sunset, just take pictures on the lawn, don't get dinner

Cons: Rude, overpriced
