The only thing the sushi server would say to us was "it comes from Japan", and that was when we could get his attention. I knew we should have got up and left when he demanded we move our dishes back to where he wanted them. We didn't see him talking to his Asian customers like that and they had moved everything. Needless to say, we won't be going back, and our company will not be having dinner meetings here either. Anyone know of a sushi bar in Hono or Waikiki that has good service?
Discriminatory. Called on a Saturday to make reservations for that same night. I was told that they were booked and there would be no chance of walking in to get a seat. My husband thought he would attempt to make a reservation too. He was able to get a reservation at a prime time and we got a nice table when we got there. I was conflicted because we did want a reservation, however, when he was treated better than me, I did not appreciate the restaurant. Besides, the service isn't that great (they're slow and don't treat you well unless you speak Japanese) and the food isn't really spectacular (the sushi pieces are less than stunning and they can't even cook chicken right--I had to send back because it was undercooked). We can get better sushi at Zippy's.
Overrated!. I have been to suhsi places all over the world for 40 years, starting from the late 60's when eating raw fish was still virtually unheard of outside Japan. I have been to this place several times since I bought a place in Hawaii. The food at this joint is below average compared to similarly-priced sushi places in LA or NY. The service is acceptable, but the chef is usually not very attentive to non-Japanese-speaking customers at the bar. Last night, I had to leave the place hungry after an hour and a half, because I failed to attract his attention for an hour after my first order. All the while, he was serving his Japanese customers who showed up a good half an hour later order after order, joking and all. If you don't speak Janapese, avoid this place! Honolulu is hardly a goumet town, but there must be some other decent sushi places. If not, well, my doctor has always been advising me that eating fish raw is a risky business!
OK for Hawaii. It's an OK place for Hawaii, but wouldn't stand a chance in mainland or in Tokyo. Fish was not too impressive for the price. Staff was courteous, but it took an hour and a half to get just 5 orders of sushi at the bar.
Nice and Authentic. Its a great place to go for good sushi. You get very large cuts from the chef and its usually fast service if you can get his attention. You have to be aggressive with that in ordering you food. I would rate this place high for the authentic style and great food. Reservations are recommended as you might have to wait. Good valet service.
bad to the bone.
had a bone in a piece of sashimi, manager said
"it happens". never before, plus, dynamite was not
so, and toro was very gristly...
