Editorial Review for Kalalau Trail/Na Pali Coast – by Suz Andreasen

The Scene
A hike along the lush Kalalau Trail leads from the heights of Bali Hai to the renowned waterfall at Hanakapi-ai. Pick up the path at a clearly marked entrance on Ke'e Beach. Start early and wear old clothes, as the foot trail is covered with Kauai's famed red dirt.

The Experience
The first scenic mile of the 11-mile hike features lush landscape and stunning views of the coast. The second mile is marked by a steep downhill drop, large black boulders and the sound of trickling water. Once you hit Hanakapi'ai beach, take a dip in the stream--the ocean tide here is very dangerous. A side trip to Hanakapi'ai Falls is marked by switchbacks and dense brush, but the journey is worth the effort. Lush foliage and sweeping pools of gurgling water surround the spectacular falls.

If you are into hiking, this is one of the best trails you can ever hike. I will say that the first mile of the trail is pretty tough....so prepare yourself for that. Also, make sure you wear shoes that can handle slippery conditions. The trail will get moist in places. The views are dramatic and I would recommend that you make it all the way back to the falls. When you make it past the first part of the hike, you'll be at the top of the Pines... look left, and you will see a great veiw of the Napali Coast. You won't regret it. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Aloha!

Pros: views, wild fruit, waterfalls

Cons: , rainy
