Editorial Review for Buttonwood Farm Winery – by Tara de Lis

In Short
Family-owned since the late 1960s, the 106-acre farm was originally designed for horse breeding, but gave way to the increasing grape-growing trend 20 years later. Now home to 39 acres of vineyards and seven varietal plantings--including the signature, limestone soil-sprung Sauvingnon Blanc, it produces about 7,500 cases a year in total. The tasting room is quaint and welcoming; with a small selection of trinkets and seeds for sale; the gardens feature native plants and an expansive meadow for picnicking, strolling and the occasional marriage proposal.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

The tasting fee is $7.50, and includes a small Riedel glass. Usually, all but the Syrah/Cab blend and the Trevin are available for sipping.

When to Go

Summer is by far the most popular time to visit, when the estate grown selection of peaches is in full bloom. The season usually begins around the Fourth of July holiday and ends by Labor Day. Call to ensure availability.

The Extras

The winery participates in various themed events throughout the year, including FrancFest in May and Stars, Stripes and Syrahs over an Independence Day weekend. If peaches are in season during the Syrah event, you'll get the chance to try sweet barbecued verions of the fruit.

SHADY! My husband requested 2 tastings and handed the guy a $20. The guy took the money and didn't give us back our change, so we figured the tastings must be $10 each. It wasn't until I overheard the tastings were $7.50 that I demaded my change back. Who tries to rip you off at a winery? It was supposed to be classy, but it was KLASSY. There are too many other good wineries in the area like Blackjack Ranch to put up with that nonsense. The wine wasn't great either...most made me wince. It tasted like the cheap kind they serve at bad weddings that give you the hangover from hell....

Pros: Nice back woods area

Cons: Dishonest staff members, is the wine from a box?
