Find the Shrimp Trucks!
by reyrey333
When coming up to North Shore, besides visiting the beaches, look for the shrimp trucks parked along the road. They're spread out from the end of Hwy 99 at Haleiwa town all the way down Kameahmea to windward side of the island to Kuhuku. We always love the drive so we go all the way to Kuhuku Shrimp truck. Its about 2-3miles after the golf course. They have their own shrimp pond. I recommend the spicy garlic shrimp!
- Pros: great beaches, SHRIMP TRUCKS!!!!
- Cons: a bit of a drive from waikiki, surf season has lots of traffic
Surf culture, offbeat shops and the world's largest waves are at home in laid-back "Surf City."

In Short
In the winter, when the swells hit up to 20 feet, the main beaches that make up the North Shore host some of the world's finest surfers. Hit Sunset Beach with binoculars and get a glimpse of the real Hawaiian 5-0 wave riders in action. Next, head for the silky white sands of Waimea Bay, where stunning photo ops abound. Take a quick dip before heading into Haleiwa Town for lunch. Originally built by a sugar plantation baron at the turn of the century, this historic town came alive in the '60s when mainland visitors fell in love with its homey, rustic feel. White-washed houses, funky boutiques and surf shacks line the quaint streets. Grab a bite to eat and spend an afternoon roaming through the shops in your new board shorts and flip-flops.
- Pros: SceneryWater SportsShops, Town
- Cons: Hour Drive from Waikiki
Nice place for snorkeling

There are few beach with decent sands and no rock; but most of them are overly crowded and hard to find places to park. Most beaches were rocky and are great for snorkeling and surfing. There are plenty of places to eat and shop around town. We don't find this attractive for sun and sand or just getting wet.
- Pros: Beautiful scenery, place to eat and shop around town, shrimp trucks
- Cons: Hard to find parking space
North Shore - Haleiwa Town

This is truly a wonderful place on the island of Oahu. The people are wonderful , friendly, and welcoming!! Though there are some tourists , the hustle and bustle of Waikiki doesn't really follow them up here. There is a small line of shops, several places to dine, road side sales, and the some of the best beaches you'll ever see!My personal favoriteis Waimea Bay ! Shaved ice at Matsumotos is a must !! Haleiwa is one of the places that keeps me coming back to this island!!
- Pros: Gorgeous beaches, casual places to eat, Best shaved ice
North Shore-Haleiwa Town

This little town on the island of Oahu is the best! If you feel like getting away from all of the crowds and commercialization of Waikiki and Honolulu, this is the place to be. Yes, there are tourists here, but it is still a place that is mostly islanders. It's the "real" island. The shopping is great, the food is the best and not as overpriced as everywhere else. Don't miss a meal at Joe's. It's casual and the food is awesome. If I had my choice of where to go on Oahu, the North Shore would be it.
- Pros: real shave ice, not as commercialized, true Hawaii
- Cons: , shops close early
