It's easy to get caught up in the beauty of Ke'e Beach, and therefore underestimate the ocean's mighty power! Snorkeling's gorgeous in summer - I saw a giant turtle and thousands of colorful fish. BUT... take my advice, stay away from the reef opening - I was unaware it existed until I got caught in a rip current. It's left near the rocks - where it LOOKS calm! Stay right, where the reef will protect you. Don't swim at all in the winter, as it becomes quite dangerous... but DO go for the scenery, which is breathtaking! Always assess the water conditions in Hawaii before you swim, they're constantly changing. If you DO get caught in a rip current, do this and you will survive: swim parallel to shore - the current is fairly narrow and will release you - then swim back to shore. Don't waste energy fighting it!

Pros: Breathtaking scenery, Great snorkeling, Turtles!

Cons: , Car robberies occur, Icky facilities

Insider Tips

Parking

The lot fills up quickly as hikers tend to start on the Kalalau trail early and take up all the spots. Bring loads of water and lock your car. While Kauai is very safe, there have been thefts.
