What a poignant and thoughtful film. It truly leaves one thinking well after one leaves the movie theater. What makes this film outstanding, in my opinion, is that it is not preachy, yet it uncovers so many problems with our system that should and need to be corrected. In addition, it carefully yet meticulously addresses the issues of race within a religion (senegalese woman/middle eastern man) but not too much, it highlights how one's unhappiness with their life can be due to consistent routine which may lack adventure and color, and prob most importantly, it educates us as to how a couple, that was probably like our own immigrant grandparents or parents struggle to become American but are unable to because of a flawed patriot act. The film centers around a Connecticut professor who plans on visiting his nyc apartment, when he travels there to give a presentation, only to discover that it has been occupied by an undocumented immigrant couple. The couple were conned into renting the apartment, thinking it was available. The professor, however, allows them to stay while they are looking for more permanent housing, but as time passes, he takes an interest in the couple, especially the young man who is skillful with the African drum. As the young man begins to teach him to play, the professor starts to appreciate life again feel young, but this all is ephemeral once the young man is stopped by the police for something he didn't do... Now panicking, due to his fear of deportation, the young man is sent to a detention center where his girlfriend and mother (also undocumented) cannot visit due to their immigration status. What makes this story additionally textured and richly layered is the fact that the professor and the young man's mother begin to care deeply for one another as they try to free the young man. The entire dynamic of all the characters are all well acted with a story line that is extremely believable. Truly worth watching.

Pros: great acting, very good story, very realistic. Easily identifiable characters.

Cons: none that i could recall
